What happens to a student who plays Trumps and smokes cigarettes in the Kaimuki High School band restrooms every chance he could? For Harvey Yamauchi, he becomes a PTA (Parent Teacher Association) President.
You probably know Harvey as the bandleader of the Electric Fish and the Tofu Factory during high school and now the leader of The Kingpins. What you may not know is that Harvey received a lifetime membership award with the National PTA for his service to the Moanalua Elementary School and Moanalua Middle School; about 18 years in various leadership positions.
As you may have guessed, Harvey's children, Tara and Dylan, attended Moanalua Elementary and Middle Schools. While his children were in elementary school, Harvey got railroaded into being in charge of the Santa Claus booth for their Fun Fair, a fundraising activity that netted $400-500. This resulted in a co-chairmanship the following three years and even more fundraising success.
This caught the attention of school officials and parents. They convinced Harvey to serve as PTA President for Moanalua Elementary School for eight years, then PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) President for Moanalua Middle School for six years.
One of Harvey's strengths was fundraising which the schools took full advantage of. The fundraising arm of the school laid in its music department. Harvey served two years as the intermediate school's music department Vice President and another two years as its President. This was followed by two years as the high school's music department Vice President and seven years as its President.
Two of the major fundraising efforts spearheaded by Harvey included raising about $25,000 for the music department's filing system for its music sheets and raising about $20,000 for new carpets. Monies were raised by having students, parents and staff sell chicken and having the school hold craft fairs with funds coming from vendors' booth fee.
Trumps anyone?
